March 3, 2019
Rising from the Ashes
On the evening of Sunday, March 3, 2019, a major fire broke out at the Hamilton River Road Mall in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. The 50-year-old building was a total loss. Among the businesses destroyed was our Royal LePage Turner Realty office — years of files, equipment, and the workspace Karen and Roberta had built their careers around, gone in a matter of hours.
Making the loss even harder: stored inside the office were costumes, printed tickets, masks, and decorations that Karen and Roberta had been collecting for over a year in preparation for their upcoming Masquerade Ball fundraiser for Libra House — the local women's shelter. The event was just six weeks away.
But the Dynamic Duo didn't stop. They regrouped, rebuilt, and kept serving their clients without missing a beat. The team eventually relocated to our current home at 1 Loring Drive, where they continue to serve Labrador today — stronger than ever.
No injuries were reported in the fire. The Hamilton River Road Mall housed several businesses including Reitmans, Eclipse, a travel agency, and Sew Crazy. All were lost.
Community Champions
The Masquerade Ball for Libra House
Karen Pomeroy and Roberta Primmer have been more than real estate agents in Happy Valley-Goose Bay — they've been community leaders. Their signature fundraiser, the Masquerade Ball, brought together nearly 200 guests for an elegant meal, auction, and "best costume" contest — all in support of Libra House, the region's emergency shelter for women and children experiencing relationship violence.
The event raised $8,000 in a single evening. Karen and Roberta also presented Libra House with a cheque representing their commission donations — connecting their real estate work directly to the cause. As Karen told Real Estate Magazine (June 2018): "We received such incredible feedback from our community."
Libra House has served Happy Valley-Goose Bay since 1985, operating a 5-bedroom, 10-bed facility that helps approximately 80 families per year. Karen and Roberta's fundraising efforts have been a lifeline for the shelter's continued operation.
In 2018, Karen and Roberta were recognized with the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation's Provincial Individual/Team Shelter Award for the East Coast — nominated by their peers for outstanding and extraordinary contributions.
